Even before Jürgen Klopp officially takes over as the new head coach of the German national team, there is already intense discussion about the future of the German national team. Following the disappointing World Cup exit, TV analyst Dietmar Hamann is calling for a radical overhaul of the roster—and has set his sights on several Bayern Munich players in the process.
Following the team’s elimination in the round of 32 of the World Cup against Paraguay, the DFB is facing a fresh start. There are strong indications that Jürgen Klopp will soon succeed Julian Nagelsmann. According to consistent media reports, the final contract details are to be finalized next week. Klopp is expected to receive a contract running through the 2030 World Cup.
For Dietmar Hamann, it’s clear that a change in coaching staff must be accompanied by a shake-up in the roster.
“I believe that Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, and Leroy Sané should no longer play a role,” Hamann explained in an interview with the Abendzeitung München.
The former national team player is particularly critical of DFB captain Joshua Kimmich. In his view, the Bayern star epitomizes the disappointing on-field performance of recent years. “With him, we’ve never made it past the quarterfinals in the last five tournaments. So I wonder why that should be any different in two years,” Hamann said.
Kimmich himself had already made it clear after the World Cup exit that he wants to continue his career with the national team. “I’ll always have the drive to give it another shot. What I’ll never do is give up,” the 31-year-old said on MagentaTV.

Hamann also advocates for new hierarchies within the national team. The TV expert suggested Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck as a possible new captain. “Felix Nmecha would also be an option; the team of the future should be built around him in central midfield,” Hamann explained.
However, the 51-year-old places the main blame for this latest failure on former national team coach Julian Nagelsmann. “If you have a coach who shows little interest and watches only a few games, you shouldn’t be surprised when you end up with a result like this,” Hamann criticized.
With Jürgen Klopp expected to take over, the national team’s personnel overhaul is likely to become one of the dominant topics at the DFB in the coming weeks.
