Sestao River have appointed 34-year-old Riojan coach Héctor Urquía from CD Tudelano as their new manager.

According to as.com, sporting director Aitor Larrazabal chose him to succeed interim Aner Blanco, who had replaced Aitor Calle, after weighing options including Murillo, Muniain and Loza.

The process began with Carlos Gurpegui, who, while recovering from a cycling accident, expressed doubts about taking the Las Llanas role.

He took the Navarrese side into this season’s promotion play-offs and, in 2023-24, led Anguiano up to the Segunda Federación.

Urquía holds a degree in sports science and a master’s in physical preparation and injury rehabilitation in football. He expressed delight at joining and confidence that it could be a very good season for the historic Biscayan club, who did not reach the Primera Federación play-offs this year.
