USA at the 2026 World Cup: How Far Can the Home Nation Really Go?

Article image:USA at the 2026 World Cup: How Far Can the Home Nation Really Go?

The 2026 World Cup will be truly special for the United States. For the first time since 1994, the country will host the tournament, but this time, they do it alongside Canada and Mexico in an expanded 48-team competition. Hosting always brings expectation – and opportunity.

For the U.S. men’s national team, the advantages are obvious: home crowds, familiar stadiums and far less travel than most of their opponents. But here’s the big question: can Mauricio Pochettino’s team turn those advantages into a genuine run deep into the tournament?

A Favourable Draw in Group D

The draw gave the United States a useful boost. Group D includes Australia, Paraguay and the winner of a playoff between Turkey, Romania, Slovakia, and Kosovo.

On paper, the Americans should feel confident. They’re currently ranked 14th in the world and already beat both Australia and Paraguay in friendlies late in 2025. Those matches won’t mean much once the World Cup begins, but they do give the squad some familiarity with their opponents.

The U.S. opens its campaign against Paraguay on June 12 in Los Angeles, a game that should feel more like a major event than a typical group-stage match. With the home crowd behind them, the expectation is not just to qualify, but to win the group.

Players to Watch

Since arriving, Pochettino has gradually put his stamp on the team. Tactically, the team has leaned toward a 3-4-3 system built around pressing and quick transitions. It suits the athletic profile of the squad and gives attacking players freedom in wide areas. Here are some players to watch in the USMNT:

  • Christian Pulisic: creative source
  • Folarin Balogun: biggest goal threat
  • Weston McKennie: provides energy and attacking support
  • Tyler Adams: brings balance in the midfield
  • Ricardo Pepi: another huge source of goals

There are a few concerns, though.

  1. Antonee Robinson’s form has dropped this season, no thanks to injuries.
  2. Giovanni Reyna has hardly played this year because of muscular problems.
  3. Tyler Adams is just returning from a knee problem.

Depth could become important if injuries linger.

Where Do the Odds Stand?

Betting markets are cautiously optimistic about the USMNT. For a full breakdown of outright winner prices, group projections, and value picks, the World Cup betting odds is one of the most comprehensive resources available.

As of early February 2026, Spain leads the outright market at around +400, with England, France, Brazil and Argentina closely grouped behind. The USA sits at approximately +5000 with major sportsbooks — the 14th or 15th choice overall. That may seem long, but it already represents a meaningful move from the pre-draw price of +6600 to +8000 at various books, largely driven by the favourable group draw and home-crowd factor.

The Honest Verdict

Are the USMNT favorites? No. But reaching the quarter-finals feels like a reasonable goal. If the United States can win its group, the knockout path could become more manageable.

For the USMNT, the tournament begins on June 12. Friendlies against Belgium and Portugal coming up should offer a better sense of how ready Pochettino’s team really is.

For a host nation playing in front of its own fans, the chance is there. Up to them to make it count.
