A US television record for a football match was set during the USA v Belgium World Cup last-16 tie, with nearly 42 million viewers.
The United States were beaten by Belgium overnight from Monday to Tuesday, yet the broadcast again broke national records for the sport. According to Reuters, the match attracted 30 million viewers on Fox, peaking at almost 37 million. With a further 12 million on Spanish-language Telemundo, the combined average reached 42 million.
That comfortably surpassed the previous US record set during last Wednesday's win over Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, which drew 24.429 million.
The figure also outstripped audiences for some of the country's marquee events. Game five of the NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks, when the Knicks clinched the title, drew 24.5 million.
Game seven of the 2025 World Series, in which the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays, was watched by 26 million. American football still dominates, with the 2025 Super Bowl averaging an audience of 127.7 million Americans.
