USA – World Cup Profile

Article image:USA – World Cup Profile

The USMNT are the main hosts of the 2026 World Cup. 78 of the 104 total matches will take place in the United States. In Qatar 2022, the Yanks made it out of the group stage with an undefeated record after two draws with the United Kingdom (England and Wales) and a win over Iran in the final game. Their knockout run was short-lived though. In the round of 16, the USMNT were dismantled 3-1 by a strong Netherlands team.

Host nations often overperform in the World Cup. In 2018, Russia shocked the world by knocking out Spain and making it to the quarterfinals. They lost on penalties to eventual finalists Croatia. In 2014, Brazil made it to the semifinals, although the less said about that game the better. In 2002, co-hosts South Korea knocked out Italy and Spain on the way to the semifinals. Can this USMNT golden generation do the same?

How They Qualified

Pretty straightforward one here. The USA automatically qualified for the World Cup alongside Mexico and Canada due to being the host nations. That made for a very weak CONCACAF qualifying process. Next!

Key Players

Christian Pulisic

“The LeBron James of soccer” (if you know you know) is arguably the greatest American player of all time and he’s just entered his prime. Pulisic is certainly the most talented American ever, but he comes into this World Cup after a pretty rough season. After a messy public breakup with ex-girlfriend Alexa Melton, Pulisic’s form took a turn for the worse. He hasn’t scored a single goal for AC Milan in 2026 and was poor in March friendlies against Belgium and Portugal.

However, it’s looking like Pulisic may have found a spark. Captain America scored his first goal of the calendar year against Senegal and also provided an assist to Sergiño Dest. He was heavily involved in most of the USMNT’s attacks against Germany but the end product wasn’t there. Back in 2022, Pulisic showed why he’s the USA’s most important player. He scored the crucial goal against Iran to send his country through to the knockouts and assisted both of the USMNT’s other goals in the tournament. The Stars and Stripes will need that level from Christian Pulisic this summer if they are to make it far.

Chris Richards

The weak point of this USA team is undoubtedly the defense. Captain Tim Ream is on his last legs, Miles Robinson makes mistakes every time he plays, and goalkeeper Matt Freese is serviceable at best. The exception is Chris Richards. The Alabama native has cemented himself as a starter for Crystal Palace in the Premier League. He’s helped them achieve unprecedented levels of success, winning the FA Cup, Community Shield, and Conference League in the last two seasons.

Richards suffered an injury scare against Brentford in the second-last Premier League game of the season for Palace. He came off with a sprained ankle and has been working his way back to fitness ever since, aiming to return in time for the USA’s World Cup opener against Paraguay. Luckily for the USMNT, he’s back in training and has publicly said that he is ready for the match. The friendlies against Senegal and Germany showed how suspect the USA defense is without Richards as they conceded twice in both games. He also didn’t play in the 5-2 loss to Belgium in March. Scoring goals shouldn’t be a problem but keeping them out will be, which is why Richards is crucial to this team.

Potential Breakout Player

Alex Freeman

The meteoric rise of Alex Freeman over the last two years has been incredible to watch. When he turned 20 back in 2024, Freeman only had three MLS appearances to his name. That season he played for Orlando City’s B team in MLS Next Pro and was clearly way too good for the level. The young right back got his chance with the first team in 2025 and immediately became one of the best in the league at his position. He scored six goals and recorded six assists in all competitions. Those performances helped him garner European interest. Freeman signed for LaLiga club Villarreal in January and has since made nine appearances for them.

Freeman made his international debut for the USA last summer against Türkiye, one of their group stage opponents in the World Cup. Although they lost, Freeman was impressive at right back against Juventus wonderkid Kenan Yıldız. He earned a starting spot for that summer’s Gold Cup and was consistently solid as the US finished as runners-up. His best USA performance to date came in November against Uruguay. The USMNT won 5-1 and Freeman scored a brace. The son of former Super Bowl champion Antonio Freeman, athleticism runs in the family. Alex’s strength and pace will give opposing wingers problems and also make him an asset going forward. He’ll start at right back for the States this summer despite being the youngest member of the squad.

World Cup History

The USMNT’s best ever finish at a World Cup came in the very first edition of the tournament. All the way back in 1930, the USA came in third place after beating Belgium and Paraguay before losing to Argentina. They made it again in 1934 and 1950 but a long drought followed. The Stars and Stripes failed to qualify for the World Cup for 40 years, making their return in 1990 but losing every single game. They hosted the next tournament in 1994 and narrowly lost to eventual champions Brazil 1-0 in the round of 16. Hosting the World Cup did wonders for soccer in the United States and they’ve only failed to qualify once since then.

2002 brought the best World Cup performance for the USA in modern times. The Yanks made it out of their group by beating Portugal, drawing South Korea, and losing to Poland. That set up a mouthwatering round of 16 matchup against CONCACAF rivals Mexico. In a historic game, the USA won “Dos a Cero” thanks to goals from Brian McBride and Landon Donovan. They faced Germany in the quarterfinals and were controversially eliminated after a missed handball call.

Since that run, it’s been a lot of the same for the USA. They were knocked out in the group stage in 2006 and have been eliminated in the round of 16 in every World Cup they’ve qualified for since. That excludes the 2018 World Cup, where the USMNT failed to qualify in one of the darkest moments in American soccer history. As mentioned previously, they had a strong group stage showing in 2022 before being outclassed by the Netherlands in the first knockout.

Coach Profile: Mauricio Pochettino

The 2026 World Cup has a lot of big name managers. Carlo Ancelotti is in charge of Brazil, Julian Nagelsmann is the boss of Germany, Thomas Tuchel is coaching England, and Mauricio Pochettino is managing… the USA? Not many people saw that one coming back in 2024 when Pochettino was appointed as USMNT manager after Gregg Berhalter was fired. Poch has coached at the highest level for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, PSG, and Chelsea. His crowning achievement was reaching a Champions League final with Spurs in 2019 but he also won Ligue 1 with PSG in the 2021-22 season.

Pochettino took the USA job at a low point for the national team. They had just been grouped at home in Copa America and morale in camp was at an all-time low. Poch’s very first game as USA manager was a win over Panama, one of the teams that they lost to in said Copa America. However, the first year or so under the Argentine were rough. They finished fourth in the Nations League after losing to that same Panama team in the semis and to Canada in the final. Last summer, many key players skipped out on the Gold Cup and the USA lost to Mexico in the final. Pochettino still hasn’t won a trophy for the USA but form has turned around in recent friendlies and his tenure will ultimately be judged by how far he takes this team in the World Cup.

Fan Culture

Similar to group opponents Australia, soccer isn’t the most popular sport in the USA. In fact, it’s not even close. American football and basketball still reign supreme, although soccer has recently overtaken hockey and baseball. The passion for the sport is growing, with millions of fans now tuning into the top European leagues as well as their local MLS teams. Having the World Cup in the United States this summer is an incredible opportunity for the country to fully embrace soccer and a good tournament from the USMNT is key to that.

The major problem with the USMNT fanbase is that they are often outnumbered. Almost all USMNT games are played in the USA, yet their opponents usually have more fans in the stands. This especially happens when they face rivals Mexico. However, both friendlies this summer had the best USMNT crowds in several years and there’s hope around the country that the World Cup is bringing fans that would normally support other countries together to root for the USA.
