Women's soccer is about heat up on the pitch as winter turns to spring. The She Believes Cup is less than a month away, and the NWSL is gearing up for another season. One player is coming on strong on both the club and national levels.
Emma Sears has been coming on as one of the future stars and is looking more and more like a possible heir apparent to the forwards of the National Team that came before her, such as retired Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath.
In two seasons with Racing Louisville of the NWSL, she has 15 goals, and it just 14 appearances with the National Team, she has found the back of the net six times.
She has been a prolific goal scorer and one who echoes what the National Team always seem to be looking for from their forwards. Players such as Heath were famous for the creative ways they scored and distributed the ball.
Now Sears seems poised to be one of the stars and could be one of the keys to success and momentum as the National Team looks to move toward the World Cup in 2027.
The three-goal performance against New Zealand could demonstrate how a young player of her caliber could be one of the leaders on a young and ever-changing roster.
With Racing, she signed a contract extension this past fall and should be one of the stars of a team that made the postseason for the first time in club history. She had 10 goals in the campaign that saw the team with an -X by their name at season's end in the standings.
In 2023, there were many questions surrounding the National Team and whether the aging stars could be replaced in both national and international competition. Now with Trinity Rodman being a superstar, Mallory Swanson set to return and the rise of Sears, those questions have been answered.
Both Rodman and Swanson were a part of the Gold Medal Team in 2024 at the Olympics. For Sears, it will be important for her to continue to play strongly and generate scoring chances for her to join them in 2027.
But it seems based on the calm she has displayed on the biggest stage that she won't be phased. I do not think anyone would be surprised if she were on the 23-player roster for the World Cup roster less than two years from now.
