USWNT stars abroad: What’s next for Alyssa Thompson, Naomi Girma and Sam Coffey | OneFootball

With the WSL about to kick off and World Cup qualifying later this year, USWNT regulars Alyssa Thompson, Naomi Girma, Sam Coffey, Emily Fox and Phallon Tullis-Joyce face defining club campaigns across England and France as they look to sharpen form and secure places.

Coffey helped Manchester City win a first WSL title in a decade. A late-season injury kept her out of the USWNT’s June camp and two friendlies in Brazil, but 45 pre-season minutes against Barcelona suggest she should be ready for the opener.

At Chelsea, Thompson scored nine in 32, seven in the WSL plus three assists, earning Player of the Season and Team of the Season recognition. Girma’s minutes have been curtailed by injuries, but if she stays healthy and sharp she should be a first-choice USWNT centre back for October’s matches against Spain and World Cup qualifying.

Tullis-Joyce made 21 WSL appearances for Manchester United, keeping seven clean sheets and 17 shutouts in all competitions, and she is still chasing the USWNT’s No. 1 shirt as Janina Leitzig arrives from Leicester City. In France, OL Lyonnes’ 19-year-old Lily Yohannes, who scored six including two in the Champions League and was named UEFA Women’s Champions League Revelation of the Season, must adapt without Lindsey Heaps after her move to Denver Summit FC.
