The international window in women’s football continued on Saturday with games across North America.

Here is what went down.

USWNT and Hayes ease past South Korea

Scorers: Swanson 34′, 74′, Davidson 38′, 48′

The Emma Hayes era got off to a strong start on Saturday as the USA beat South Korea 4-0 in Commerce City, Colorado.

The former Chelsea boss had her first official taste of American soccer and opted to field a lineup with limited experience (each player averaged just 45.5 caps). However, the individuals on the pitch proved confident.

Sophia Smith played through Mallory Swason who smashed home from point blank range. It was her ninth goal in her last nine starts for country.

A mere four minutes later, the hosts were in cruise control. A leaping Tierna Davidson headed home at the back post to make things 2-0.

And the defender didn’t stop there!

Davidson then secured a brace with yet another towering header.

She made history in the process, too, becoming the first USWNT defender to score twice in one match since 2016 (Julie Ertz against Colombia).

Swanson later piled misery on the visitors with a second of her own with a low drive into the far left post.

The 4-0 win means Hayes equaled the second-largest margin of victory in a permanent #USWNT coach’s first game in charge.

The USA will face South Korea again on Tuesday in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Olympic champs Canada dig deep against Mexico

Scorers: Leon 73′, Lacasse 86′

Canada had to wait until late in the second half to dispatch Mexico 2-0 in Montreal.

It was a cagey match for the hosts throughout the first half and the reigning Olympic champions of course don’t have Christine Sinclair to rely on anymore.

It wasn’t until the last 15 minutes that the Canadians found a way through. Substitute Evelyne Viens played through Adriana Leon who scored her 40th goal for her country.

Then some 10 minutes later, Cloe Lacasse controlled a ball over the top and stayed calm, cool and collected to secure the win.

The assist once again was from Viens, a striker trying to fight for a starting spot ahead of the upcoming Olympics.

Canada will face Mexico again on Tuesday in Toronto.
