Arsenal clinical against Køge

Arsenal took a big step towards the quarter-finals as they comfortably overcame Køge at home.

The home side took an early lead when they cut through Køge on the left flank and when a cross was sent into the middle, Caitlin Foord was there to finish from close range.

But the points weren’t wrapped up until the closing stages when Lotte Wubben-Moy headed in at the front post from a Beth Mead corner before Vivianne Miedema grabbed her customary goal with two minutes remaining.

The result moves Arsenal six points clear of Hoffenheim in second place, with Køge rooted to the bottom without any points.

Bayern end Lyon’s perfect start

Bayern Munich boosted their qualification hopes by handing Lyon their first defeat of this season’s competition.

In a tense affair, it took one goal to settle and it arrived from Saki Kumagai in the second half with a fantastic towering header from a corner on the right.

A draw would have been enough to see Lyon secure their place in the last eight but their progression has now been put on hold as Bayern move to within two points of the current table-toppers.

Brilliant Barça blow Hoffenheim away

Holders Barcelona kept up their perfect start to this season’s Champions League campaign with a ruthless performance against Hoffenheim.

Alexia Putellas finally broke the home side’s resistance from the penalty spot shortly before half-time and after that, the Blaugrana kicked into high gear.

Two goals in the space of four second half minutes killed things off as Irene Paredes thumped home a header from a corner before Aitana Bonmati made it three with a fine finish after a zippy move in the final third.

And they finished with a major flourish as Marta Torrejón added a fourth with another before Ana-Maria Crnogorčević tapped home from close range in injury-time to make it five.

Barcelona go clear at the top with four wins from four, while Hoffenheim are three points behind Arsenal in third place.

Benfica off the mark with last gasp winner

Benfica picked up their first win of the season at Häcken as they gave their qualification hopes a big boost thanks to a late winner.

They finally scored their first group stage goal after three games of waiting when Cloé Lacasse curled an attempt through a crowd of bodies but Elin Rubensson’s second penalty in as many games in this fixture saw her side level.

That looked like it would be enough but Benfica struck for a late winner when Catarina Amado reacted to a free-kick delivery on 92 minutes to prod in and win it in dramatic fashion.

Benfica move above Häcken on four points into third, level with Bayern in second, who play Lyon later.
