There are a number of first round qualifying matches taking place in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Saturday, here’s what went down in a selection of the games.

Celtic out after dramatic penalty shootout

Celtic’s qualification hopes are over after they lost a dramatic penalty shootout to Valerenga in Oslo.

Valerenga were quick out of the blocks and moved ahead after five minutes when Olaug Tvedten’s effort from 25-yards out skipped across the turf before landing into the bottom corner, leaving Celtic goalkeeper Kelsey Daugherty helpless.

But Celtic regrouped and levelled just four minutes later with some good pressing work from Amy Gallacher gaining the ball high up the pitch before she slipped Kit Loferski in on goal to slot home.

Both sides missed glaring chances to win the tie in normal time but the score remained tied after 90 minutes going into extra-time.

Celtic looked to had dealt the deadly blow four minutes from time with Murphy Agnew getting into the box down the left-hand side and playing the ball across for Jenny Smith to smash into the roof of the net to seemingly book Celtic’s place in the qualification playoffs.

However, there was more late drama as Elise Thorsnes levelled proceedings from the spot in the third minute of stoppage time.

A remarkable penalty shootout followed with the first 21 spot-kicks proving successful, including Valerenga goalkeeper Guto Petterson, but the unfortunate moment fell to Celtic’s shot-stopper Daugherty who missed from 12 yards to see Celtic knocked out of the competition.

Russo nets brace but Arsenal eliminated on penalties

Despite coming from behind twice, Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League on penalties at the end of a topsy-turvy tie with Paris FC.

Last year’s semi-finalists fell behind to two quick-fire Paris FC goals at the start of the second half.

The first goal came in bizarre circumstances after a quick Paris counter-attack which saw Margaux Le Mouël’s cross look to be heading in, catching Manuela Zinsberger off-guard before the ball ricocheted off the bar and into the path of Mathilde Bourdieu to head home her first just over the line.

Jonas Eidevall’s side hadn’t cleared their heads as they conceded the second straight from kick-off, losing the ball in midfield for Julie Dufour to play Bordieu through on goal before she slotted the ball through the legs of Zinsberger.

Alessia Russo took advantage of a mix-up at the back to pull one back for the Gunners with 10 minutes to go and the dramatic fightback was completed in the sixth minute of added time when Jen Beattie headed Katie McCabe’s cross home.

But there was to be another twist when Paris FC re-took the lead in the second half of extra-time. Julie Soyer’s low ball across the face of the box found its way to Louise Fleury, who finished past Zinsberger for 3-2.

The Gunners wouldn’t be beaten, however, and Russo soon scored again to make it 3-3 with a beautiful 25-yard strike and take the tie to a penalty shoot-out.

Unfortunately for Russo and Arsenal, she was unable to repeat her goalscoring heroics in the shoot-out, and her miss along with Frida Maanum’s from 12-yards saw Paris FC win 4-2 and advance.

Frankfurt knock Juventus out on penalties

Scorers: Prašnikar 66′; Cantore 48′.

Eintracht Frankfurt caused a shock after defeating Juventus on penalties to progress into the playoff rounds.

Sofia Cantore played the role of impact substitute to a tee, coming off the bench at half-time to give Juventus the lead within three minutes of the restart, volleying home from six yards out after Cristiana Girelli’s shot had rebounded into her path.

The hosts equalised to take the game into extra time just after the hour mark after Nicole Anyomi had won the ball high up before striding into the box and sliding across goal for Lara Prašnikar to tap in.

Laura Freigang missed the best chance of extra-time for Frankfurt, racing on to a poor header back before lobbing the goalkeeper but saw her shot come back off the crossbar.

To penalties the game went with Frankfurt looking to have the edge when they led 2-1 and Juventus’ Estelle Cascarino hit the post with her next effort but Verena Hanshaw failed to take advantage, seeing her spot-kick saved by Pauline Peyraud-Magnin.

Linda Sembrant levelled proceedings before both sides then scored and missed their next two penalties to take the shootout into sudden death.

Frankfurt’s Carlotta Wamser slotted away her spot-kick allowing Stina Johannes to be the hero and she duly obliged, keeping out Paulina Nystrom’s effort to seal a remarkable win for Frankfurt.
