Valdano has cautioned Arbeloa against framing Real Madrid’s debate as a battle between good and bad fans after the new coach alleged a campaign against the club. According to El Periódico Mediterráneo, the former player, coach and sporting director said such rhetoric harms the institution.

The Bernabéu whistled Florentino Pérez and the players during Saturday’s game against Levante. Since then Arbeloa has staunchly defended the president and the dressing room.

Before the Monaco Champions tie, he reiterated that he respects the crowd’s right to express themselves but said the jeers weaken Madrid. He added there are campaigns to undermine the club and that he knows who is behind them. He has not named anyone, instead pointing to supporters angered by recent club decisions.

Valdano argued that splitting the fanbase is a very bad idea and that a divisive approach does not suit the club. He said Madrid is bigger than Arbeloa, Florentino or Bernabéu, that opinions will differ in a highly emotional environment, and that airing talk of political manoeuvring only stains the club’s image.

He had earlier criticised the decision to dismiss Xabi Alonso, saying he looked unstable from day one and never seemed to have the club’s backing. The Argentine also highlighted an unbalanced squad lacking a strategist in midfield, adding that a midfielder was requested from his arrival and never signed.
