Valencia CF’s most ill-fated goalkeepers in their history

Valencia CF have long been defined by great goalkeepers, yet some arrivals have fallen short. The position is pivotal, and Giorgi Mamardashvili has excelled since joining from Dinamo Tbilisi for around one million euros to bolster Valencia Mestalla before stepping up.

According to Superdeporte, significant fees were spent in the Lim era on Ryan, Neto and Jasper Cillessen. While Ignacio Eizaguirre, Manzanedo, Abelardo, Ochotorena, Andoni Zubizarreta, Santiago Cañizares and Diego Alves are celebrated, others are remembered less fondly.

Gustavo Campagnuolo arrived as an italo-Argentine prospect to learn under Zubizarreta. He conceded six on debut against Salamanca, then two against Real Sociedad, finishing with eight in two before departing.

Renan cost five million euros from Internacional of Brazil, began with six wins in seven, then errors and a muscle tear saw César Sánchez take over. A loan at Xerez brought 61 conceded in 35, and he returned to Internacional on a free.

Timo Hildebrand arrived from Stuttgart with pedigree but struggled amid dressing-room strife and Ronald Koeman’s tenure. After Cañizares was dropped he became number one, yet conceded 60 in 39, then six in the Supercopa de España, before joining Hoffenheim.

Miguel Ángel Moyá cost five million euros from Mallorca and, despite early backing from Unai Emery, shipped nine by matchday five, prompting César Sánchez’s return. He later rebuilt at Getafe.

Cillessen’s form was not disastrous, but injuries and a poor team dynamic told, while a 35 million euros fee and salary loomed large as Neto went to Barcelona. He left for one million euros to NEC after 41 conceded in 34 league matches across his first two seasons, dipping in his third as Mamardashvili emerged.
