Valencia set to wait until January for centre-back as Alaba was on radar | OneFootball

Valencia will hold off until the January window to add a centre-back after failing to find a convincing free agent. According to AS, Braulio Vázquez and Javier Aguirre agree the back line needs help, largely because of injuries and to add leadership.

Aguirre noted he currently has three centre-backs sidelined and said he has not yet discussed specific needs with Braulio, adding they will speak in due course. He is focused on getting his injured defenders back.

Since returning in mid September, Braulio has scouted unattached centre-backs while also completing Aguirre’s appointment. Among the free agents considered was David Alaba, 34, who offered authority but raised fitness doubts after knee and calf issues and no group training since Austria’s World Cup camp in July. Financial Fair Play room is also limited.

Alaba has since signed for Udinese.

As it stands, Justin De Haas is the only fully fit centre-back. Looking ahead to the Racing de Santander game in two weeks, Aguirre hopes to have César Tárrega available. With Mouctar Diakhaby completing sessions and in good spirits, staff intend to be cautious, while José Copete, like Diego López, needs careful handling as progress has been slow.
