Valverde has addressed Selton Sued’s dwindling minutes, saying the context is not simple as Athletic prepare for a decisive European tie against Sporting de Portugal. As reported by El Correo, he spoke before the match and framed the situation as complicated.

Selton burst into the first team with a Champions League debut against Newcastle, then started a few days later in the win over Real Oviedo. Since then his involvement has tapered off, his last outing came in the Supercopa semi-final against Barcelona with the tie already decided.

The youngster has been with the senior group since his debut on five November. Apart from that league start, he has made five late substitute appearances and has not featured for Basconia, where he began the season. In total he has played 212 minutes across seven matches.

In the boardroom the club have backed him with a deal to 2029 and a 30 million release clause. Valverde praised his rare qualities and difference to others, yet said it is harder to introduce players of this profile when things are tough.

He stressed Selton remains with the group and could play at any moment. Valverde added the player must weigh risk when he plays and that his potential is extraordinary. On whether he drops back to the reserves or goes on loan, he said that will be assessed in time.
