Micky van de Ven has said Tottenham should be embarrassed by their season but expressed his relief after the club avoided Premier League relegation.

A 1-0 win over Everton confirmed Spurs’ place in the Premier League for next season, with Joao Palhinha scoring the decisive goal in North London.

The result ensures Spurs avoided the prospect of a first relegation since 1977, which would have occurred had the club been beaten, after West Ham won against Leeds.

Van de Ven thanked the fans for their support as a ’12th man’ on Sunday, but said the North Londoners must be embarrassed by their campaign, after a second straight 17th-place finish.

Speaking to BBC Sports match of the day, he said: “I think everyone was behind us today and we played with 12 men on the pitch.

“Everton were unbelievable, they kept pushing us and when we needed to defend but they kept pushing, I think they were a massive part of the win.

“It is unaccessible that the last game we played this season we play for relegation. This club has some unbeilable players. It was embarrassing to let it come to the final day but we did it and that is what is important.

“To be honest I was more emotional at the end of the final whistle, it has been a tough season for me personally as well. I played almost every game and I have suffered a lot, the emotions are really happy and we must not let it happen again.”
