Kayne Van Oevelen says a strange, drawn-out summer has ended with a move to Valencia, where he wanted to be since July. The 23-year-old joins from Ipswich Town. He added that, if it had been his choice, he would have signed for five years.

According to AS, Valencia had laid the groundwork but did not meet the four million Volendam asking price while Ron Gourlay prioritised funds for Guido Rodríguez. Ipswich paid it and signed the Dutch goalkeeper, yet with four other keepers already there, all parties felt a loan made sense.

At his presentation in Paterna, attended by Gourlay, his agent and relatives, Van Oevelen said he needed to prove himself at Ipswich and that a loan was considered best for him. He is pleased to be at Valencia this season.

He praised Stole Dimitrievski, while making clear he will compete to earn the starting shirt. He said he cannot say whether he will be back-up or first choice, and will push hard and learn from his team-mate. He also liked the attitude of the goalkeeping coach and believes it is on him to prove his worth.

Van Oevelen described himself as a hard worker, strong with his feet and in the air, and comfortable playing out from the back. There is no option to buy in his deal, and he did not rule out staying beyond 30 June, saying time will tell.
