It has been announced that Timon Wellenreuther will start in goal for Feyenoord against Fenerbahçe in the Champions League qualifying round. Although Robin van Persie initially opted for Justin Bijlow as his first-choice goalkeeper, Wellenreuther is currently the preferred choice.
This all depends on the fitness of both goalkeepers. Although Bijlow participated in every pre-season with the Rotterdam side, Van Persie has implied that the goalkeeper is currently unable to play three matches a week. He is fit for training, but Van Persie wants a fully fit goalkeeper. Therefore, for the time being, has opted for Wellenreuther.
“Right now, we have to make a decision for this coming weekend, with an eye on the match against Fener. Justin is doing really well, getting fitter and fitter, but he’s currently training fit and not match fit to play three times a week. That’s why Timon is starting against Fener. And that will remain the case for the foreseeable future.”
This gives Bijlow time to get back to match fitness and form. Van Persie, while previously selecting Bijlow, has complete confidence in Wellenreuther.
“He’s a top goalkeeper. He’s done really well these past few weeks. He’s fit and in form. Timon deserves this, based on what he’s shown since I’ve been here.” Wellenreuther joined Feyenoord in 2022. Last season, he played 29 Eredivisie matches.
In preparation for the new season, Bijlow played some minutes against Union Saint-Gilloise (45 minutes) and OGC Nice (the full 90), but he’s still not fully fit. The goalkeeper has struggled with injuries in the past. Liam Bossin is Feyenoord’s third-choice goalkeeper.
