Lionel Messi’s hopes of lifting Inter Miami’s first CONCACAF Champions Cup came to an end on Wednesday, as Vancouver Whitecaps cruised into the final with a 3-1 win in Florida - 5-1 on aggregate.
Messi helped spark a bright start. Jordi Alba got the crowd going in the 8th minute, tucking away a tidy assist from Suárez to give Miami early hope and cut the gap to one.
But it all unravelled after the break. Vancouver hit back with two goals in quick succession — Brian White and Pedro Vite doing the damage — flipping the tie on its head and leaving Miami needing four without reply.
Instead, it was Vancouver who bagged another, with Sebastian Berhalter sealing a famous win for the Canadians.
The Whitecaps now wait to face either Cruz Azul or Tigres UANL in the final — that tie is level at 1-1 ahead of Thursday’s second leg.
