VAR calls were questioned after a 'nasty' coming together that injured Leeds defender Joe Rodon during Sunday’s Premier League meeting at Sunderland.

According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Black Cats were chasing another Stadium of Light result to sustain an unexpected push for Europe, while Leeds sought to build on improved form that has eased relegation fears and raised hopes of extending their top flight stay.

In a lively start, Rodon went down following a challenge from Brian Brobbey, with no blame placed on the hosts' striker.

Shortly after, Simon Adingra’s trailing leg appeared to catch Rodon, his ankle rolled and he was forced off. Within minutes Adingra opened the scoring and the hosts led narrowly at half-time.

Former Leeds striker Michael Bridges felt the second incident was worse for Rodon, said he doubted the defender would return, and suggested the close-range contact could have been checked by VAR at Stockley Park. He described it as nasty and accepted the Brobbey challenge did not warrant a booking.
