Video review produced a rare scene in Group D, with Tim Ream’s caution overturned and Miguel Almiron booked for simulation during United States v Paraguay in Los Angeles.

According to L'Équipe, this fell within newly expanded VAR scope at the World Cup. Ream was initially shown a yellow for a tackle on Almiron by Dutch referee Danny Makkelie.

In the 53rd minute, Makkelie went to the pitchside monitor. After nearly two minutes, he cancelled Ream’s booking and showed Almiron a yellow for simulation.

The change came even though the Paraguayan free-kick had already been taken.

Beyond the usual checks for goals, penalties and red cards, VAR can now also correct a potential second yellow situation, the award of a corner, and the identity of a player shown a yellow.
