A VAR intervention left Rayo Vallecano aggrieved as Real Sociedad were awarded a penalty that cancelled a home equaliser, before the visitors moved 1-3 ahead and the game ultimately finished 3-3.

Diario Vasco reports that Pulido Santana, on VAR duty, asked referee Guzmán Mansilla to review a potential foul by Ratiu on Pablo Marín that had gone unseen. In the next phase, Pedro Díaz scored legally for Rayo. After checking the monitor, Mansilla gave the penalty to Real, voiding 2-2, and Oyarzabal converted for 1-3.

On review, VAR officials stated the Rayo defender failed to play the ball and made contact with the attacker’s leg, causing an immediate trip, and asked the referee to reach his own verdict.

The VAR first offered a front angle, but Mansilla requested a lateral view. He delayed watching the screen until calm returned by the Rayo bench, issuing two yellow cards there, then asked for a freeze-frame to study the contact.

He concluded it was a punishable offence and pointed to the spot. As he considered there was a genuine attempt to play the ball, there was no dismissal, and Ratiu was booked. The call angered Rayo’s players, coaches and supporters.
