Globo.com reports that Uruguayan right-back Varela is celebrating four years at Flamengo, 10 trophies and the birth of his Rio-born daughter, and he plans to settle in the city after retiring.
He signed on 30 June 2022 and debuted on 4 September 2022 in a 25th round draw with Ceará. His most sustained season came in 2025 with 51 appearances, two goals and four assists.
His Flamengo record stands at 91 wins, 32 draws and 27 defeats, with four goals and nine assists. This season he has featured in 23 matches and set up three.
He said he is very happy, that the period has brought plenty of learning, and that last year felt especially significant. With more than 150 games, he now feels Flamengo is already his home.
Before moving to Brazil he played for Peñarol, Real Madrid Castilla, Manchester United, Eintracht Frankfurt, Copenhagen and Dinamo Moscow. For Uruguay he has 30 caps and featured at the last three World Cups.
