Vasco da Gama have activated a contractual clause to extend Robert Renan’s loan by three months, according to TNT Sports. The 22-year-old centre-back, owned by Zenit in Russia, will remain at São Januário beyond the initial term that was due to expire at the end of June.

Club officials view the move as strategic. The extra time allows an assessment of the sporting and financial viability of a permanent deal.

The possibility of an acquisition remains under internal discussion, with the player’s market valuation and the club’s budget for the rest of the season central to calculations.

Since arriving in Rio midway through last season, Renan has made 27 appearances and established himself as a regular alongside Carlos Cuesta under head coach Fernando Diniz.

A Corinthians academy product, he moved to Europe early in his career and had loan spells at Internacional and Al-Shabab in Saudi Arabia before joining the Gigante da Colina.

His youth and international experience weigh in favour of a longer stay, although the final decision will depend on the consistency of his performances during this extended spell.
