Vasco announce the appointment of Renato Gaúcho | OneFootball

Vasco have appointed Renato Gaúcho as head coach on a deal to December 2026. He will be joined by assistants Marcelo Salles and Alexandre Mendes, and his first match will be against Palmeiras on 12 in the Campeonato Brasileiro.

He signed on Tuesday at São Januário, returning for a third spell after leading the club from 2005 to 2006 and again in 2008. According to Globo.com, his name moved onto the agenda last week, hours after Fernando Diniz was dismissed.

The proposal was delayed while the club explored the possibility of hiring Artur Jorge.

As the days passed, it became clear how difficult it would be to prise the Portuguese from Al-Rayyan in Qatar. After the defeat to Fluminense in the Carioca semi-final on Sunday, Renato regained priority as the more viable option.

Internally, he was approved because he meets the board's main requirement, a coach with strong dressing-room rapport who can deliver a fresh outlook quickly.

The football department believes the squad has natural gaps, yet quality, and is performing below potential. The priority is a professional capable of raising standards through new concepts in daily work.
