According to Globo.com, Vasco have held talks with Portuguese coach Vasco Matos in recent days, although no salary offer has been made. Meetings have focused on the club’s project and how his ideas would fit the squad.

Matos is understood to view a move positively and sees Brazilian football as a suitable next step for his career. The discussions have also covered preferred playing style and expectations for both sides.

The 45-year-old has been out of work since the end of January after leaving Santa Clara in Portugal. He spent three seasons there and won the Portuguese second tier in 2024.

Last year he came close to joining Botafogo, but that agreement fell through due to bureaucratic issues.

Vasco continue to survey the market and have made initial contacts with other coaches following the departure of Renato Gaúcho. There is a sense of urgency at São Januário to settle on a new head coach quickly.

Internally, the next appointment is seen as key to reviving out-of-form players and maximising recent recruits. The board spent more than R$ 100 million on six signings in the last window and believe they can contribute more in the second half of the year.
