Members of Vasco’s largest organised supporters confronted right-back Paulo Henrique on Saturday on a street near his home in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, intimidating him and challenging his recent form and his post-match interaction with Neymar after Thursday’s game against Santos. The approach took place away from the club’s training centre.

According to Globo.com, at least eight members stopped him as he left his car, with one filming the exchange and posting it on the group’s social media channels.

The group accused him of showing deference to Neymar, referencing an embrace at full-time and alleging he asked for the forward’s shirt, while demanding respect from the player or that he consider leaving if unhappy. They also cited Neymar insulting supporters during the match.

Paulo Henrique said he has always respected Vasco, that he was unaware during the game of Neymar’s gesture and that he only learned of it afterwards because he does not use social media. He said he fouled Neymar when required and apologised later, adding he embraced Neymar as he did other players such as Moisés and Thaciano, and that he does not take the field to injure opponents.

Supporters told him his level had dipped since his Brazil call-up late last year, and he acknowledged that. The club and the defender’s camp had not commented at the time of publication.

The incident comes on the eve of Sunday’s Campeonato Carioca semi-final second leg against Fluminense. After his best spell in 2025, he made the last two Carlo Ancelotti call-ups and was named last season’s Brasileirão right-back of the year, drawing European interest that the Vasco board did not pursue.
