Fernando Diniz’s dismissal has reshaped priorities at Vasco, who have frozen recruitment to prioritise appointing a new head coach under president Pedrinho, with the international window closing next Tuesday.

According to PaponaColina, the original plan was to add a holding midfielder only if Tchê Tchê or Hugo Moura departed, both currently behind Barros and Thiago Mendes. Early 2026 performances pushed the board to seek more physicality, though hiring the coach comes first.

A tightened budget after earlier spending means targets will be free agents or loans, avoiding transfer fees. Sporting director Admar Lopes is tracking options but will wait for the new coach’s approval.

Despite the short international deadline, the Cruzmaltino can still use the domestic market. The CBF allow moves until 27 March for players active in state competitions, easing pressure while the dugout is vacant.

Focus has moved firmly to the dugout after initial soundings on Monday 23. A meeting with Renato Gaúcho, who signalled positively to initial contacts, is scheduled for Tuesday 24 in Rio de Janeiro to discuss finances and staff. Only after that outcome will the club return to the midfield target to fit the incoming manager’s profile.
