Vasco beat Palmeiras 2-1 at São Januário, coming from behind to give Renato Gaúcho a winning start and end a near 11-year wait for a victory over the visitors.
Globo.com reports that Thiago Mendes, Gómez and Cuiabano led the ratings. Mendes equalised after combining with David, then Cuiabano completed the turnaround via a neat one-two with Paulo Henrique.
Palmeiras had gone ahead through Flaco López, profiting from a Lucas Piton mistake in the box. Piton was jeered and replaced at half-time by Cuiabano, who injected intensity down the left.
Andrés Gómez was Vasco’s most dangerous outlet, though his decision-making occasionally misfired. Paulo Henrique impressed at both ends, supplying the assist for the winner with Ancelotti’s staff watching on.
Goalkeeper Léo Jardim preserved the result in stoppage time, first denying Allan at close range, then intervening smartly from an Andreas Pereira effort moments later.
Hugo Moura anchored midfield securely despite hesitating before the opener. Tchê Tchê underwhelmed, collected a soft yellow and was withdrawn. Nuno Moreira struggled on the right and made way for Adson, who raised the tempo.
David’s hold-up play brought the assist for Mendes. Spinelli replaced him up front but found it hard to retain possession under pressure.
Renato’s switch to three midfielders gave Vasco a firmer base, and his second-half changes tilted the contest as the hosts finished the stronger.
