Vasco will face Santa Fe at São Januário after the Maracanã operators, the Consórcio Fla-Flu run by Flamengo and Fluminense, rejected their request for the Copa Sul-Americana quarter-final return on Tuesday, 15 September. O Globo reports that the consortium turned down the booking.
Vasco moved quickly, selecting São Januário as the venue. The semi-final spot will be decided in the Colina Histórica, in front of the club’s supporters.
In the first leg on Tuesday 8 September, Vasco drew 0-0 with Santa Fe at altitude in Bogotá, at El Campín, with Pedro Emanuel heavily rotating his side. The stalemate keeps the tie open. The winner in Rio progresses, another draw takes it to penalties.
The consortium cited the Maracanã calendar. Flamengo are at home on 13, against Corinthians, and on 17, against Del Valle, in the Libertadores, two days either side of Vasco’s requested date, and pitch recovery is the reason given.
It was not the first denial, a request was also refused for the Vitória match in the Copa do Brasil. Vasco plan to ask for the Maracanã for the Palmeiras tie in the same competition, though internally they already expect another no.
Before then, Vasco visit Grêmio in Porto Alegre on Saturday in a direct battle near the bottom of the Brasileirão. The hosts have 28 points, Vasco have 25. Focus will then return to São Januário and the push for a semi-final place.
