According to PaponaColina, Vasco have sounded out Renato Gaúcho to replace Fernando Diniz, with talks exploring a deal through 2027.

Diniz was dismissed on Sunday, 22. The club made initial contact on Monday, 23, to gauge Gaúcho’s availability. He has been out of work since September 2025 after leaving Fluminense.

There is no formal offer yet, but the first approach opened negotiations. The hierarchy hope talks could accelerate in the coming days, helped by the coach living in Rio de Janeiro.

Vasco want a manager who can build on the technical base of Diniz’s work and deliver firmer group management. With a rough start in the Campeonato Brasileiro, the margin for error is viewed as minimal.

The coach’s camp has given a positive signal, although finances are a hurdle. At Fluminense he earned R$ 1.5 million per month and is unwilling to drop that. He also seeks performance bonuses that can add up to R$ 1 million.

A long-term contract running to the end of 2027 is on the table. This is the board’s second attempt after a December 2024 approach was turned down. Even so, optimism has grown despite the investment required.

Gaúcho considers his full backroom team non-negotiable, including assistants Alexandre Mendes and Marcelo Salles, fitness coach Mário Pereira and assistant fitness coach Gabriel Gindri Alves.

Vasco continue to assess alternatives, but he is viewed as the favourite to take charge quickly. His representative is in Rio de Janeiro and a meeting is expected on Tuesday to align proposals and expectations.
