Vasco starter suffers knee injury, major worry for cup decider

The significant victory of Vasco over Sport by 3 to 2 came at a high cost. Midfielder Jair, one of the pillars of the midfield, suffered a sprain in his right knee. The injury took him out of the match in the first half and now turns him into a major concern for the decisive sequence that the club faces ahead.

Athlete suffered sprain in right knee

The club confirmed the nature of the injury in an official statement on Sunday. The sprain occurred after Jair was tackled by Matheusinho, from Sport. The number 8 had to be replaced by Mateus Carvalho and started treatment immediately.

The player's situation had been improving. He had scored a goal and had one of his best matches in the classic against Botafogo.

Vasco awaits exams to determine severity

For now, there is no defined period for the player's return. Vasco reported that Jair will be reassessed in the coming days by the Health and Performance Department. Only after more detailed imaging tests will it be possible to determine the severity of the sprain and estimate the recovery time.

The injury occurs at the worst possible time. The coaching staff's major concern is with the return match of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil. The match against Botafogo, on September 11, is the most important game of the year. Jair's participation in the classic, therefore, is in doubt and will totally depend on his progress in the coming days.
