Vasco are pushing to appoint a new head coach, with Renato Gaúcho the priority, and Roger Machado positioned as plan B should talks stall.
ESPN Brasil reports that Roger Machado is the immediate alternative, with the club ready to turn to him if no agreement is reached in the coming days due to financial or contractual issues.
Vasco are using a 10-day window without matches to try to close a deal with Renato. The experienced coach is viewed as a strong dressing-room leader who could lift the side from the foot of the table and restore confidence in underperforming players.
If activated, Roger would arrive with clear ideas and recent Série A experience after Internacional. His teams have shown defensive organisation, a department that has troubled Vasco during a turbulent start to 2026.
Whichever option prevails, the club want a swift resolution so the new staff can install methods during the mid-season work before a demanding run of fixtures.
Roger’s off-field stance also resonates at São Januário. In June 2022, Vasco awarded him the Pai Santana honour for contributions to equality and anti-racism, reflecting the club’s Resposta Histórica principles.
