Fernando Diniz shaped much of Vasco’s 2026 recruitment before being dismissed on Sunday after defeat to Fluminense. He was key to four of the club’s six arrivals, leaving a squad built for his approach.
According to Globo.com, the board kept faith after December’s Copa do Brasil runners-up finish and planned a group to play short from the back in Diniz’s style. His close, direct manner with players was seen as helpful in attracting signings.
The six signings are defender Alan Saldivia, full-back Cuiabano, midfielder Johan Rojas, and forwards Brenner, Marino Hinestroza and Spinelli.
Diniz directly recommended Alan Saldivia and Brenner, having worked with Brenner at São Paulo and Fluminense. He approved Johan Rojas, who spoke to him before signing. He phoned Marino Hinestroza, who also had offers from Boca Juniors.
For Spinelli and Cuiabano, Diniz was kept informed but played a smaller part. The new head coach, to be chosen by the board led by president Pedrinho, will need to adapt to an already assembled squad.
For now assistant Bruno Lazaroni will take charge, with the first match against Santos on Wednesday at Vila Belmiro in the Brasileirão.
