Vasco’s red-card rash continued as they lost 3-1 to Olimpia in the Copa Sul-Americana on Wednesday. With the game at 1-1, João Vitor Mutano received a straight red on 26 minutes of the second half for a studs-up challenge that caught Alfonso in the groin.

As reported by Globo.com, the club are dealing with a run of dismissals this year. There have been eight sendings-off in 2026, six under head coach Renato Gaúcho.

In the Brasileiro, Cuesta was sent off for a lunge on Allex at 46 minutes of the second half, with Vasco already trailing 4-1 at Beira-Rio. In the Copa do Brasil, captain Thiago Mendes was dismissed for an elbow with the score at 2-2 and will miss the first leg of the round of 16.

It was the second time in this Sul-Americana campaign that Vasco finished with fewer players. Against Audax Italiano at São Januário, amid confused officiating and controversial calls, JP and Cuesta saw red and the side ended with nine, losing 2-1 after a comeback.

The Paraguayans then increased the pressure and struck twice late to complete the turnaround and secure top spot in Group G. Assistant Marcelo Salles was also sent off from the bench for dissent.
