After anger at being taken off on Sunday, Vegetti delivered the decisive last-minute header as Vasco beat Fluminense 2-1 in the Copa do Brasil semi-final first leg at the Maracanã.

He came on after 31 minutes for Nuno Moreira, with Rayan shifting position and igniting the move that ended in the veteran Argentine’s precise winner. According to Globo.com, he was lifted by team-mates at full time and praised by Fernando Diniz.

His celebration was frenetic. He removed his shirt, slipped past Coutinho and Puma, hurdled an ecstatic Hugo Moura, then was halted near the touchline by assistant Ricardo Cobalchini. He vanished beneath a pile of players as a largely Vasco crowd erupted, before sharing hugs with Tchê Tchê, GB and Paulinho, then a longer embrace with Biro, and reviving his Pirata gesture.

Before Thursday he had scored in only one of his previous 18 matches, a brace in the 3-0 win over Bragantino in the 30th round of the Brasileirão. Post-match he called himself a fighter who gives everything for the shirt, acknowledged a difficult spell with fewer minutes, and stressed that Vasco comes first. Reflecting on last weekend, he said his frustration was with the situation after a sending off led to his withdrawal, that it looked bad externally but harmony remained inside, and his focus is Sunday.

Diniz highlighted his daily commitment, leadership and influence around training and team talks, describing him as fundamental and saying their relationship is excellent, even when he plays less. Vegetti cautioned that only one game has been won and there is nothing to celebrate yet. The second leg is on Sunday at 20:30 at the Maracanã.
