Vélez file formal protest over Boca teamsheet in Copa Argentina | OneFootball

Vélez Sarsfield have formally lodged a protest with the AFA Disciplinary Tribunal over Boca Juniors listing six foreign players for their Copa Argentina last 16 tie on 2 September. The club said in a statement that Boca listed six foreign players on the official teamsheet and asked for the quarter-final place to be awarded to Vélez.

Boca eliminated Vélez in a penalty shootout, with Álvaro Montero saving two.

Vélez are seeking a finding of improper line-up and recognition of their progression. They also cite Article 31 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, updated in 2019, which allows clubs to register six foreign players, with only five authorised to sign the official teamsheet for competitive matches.

There was initial talk that Boca could be disqualified and Vélez reinstated. However, if the tribunal rules for Vélez, Boca would only face a financial sanction, as the sixth foreign player, Ángel Romero, did not feature.

Under the interpretation that only the eleven on the pitch constitute the team, substitutes are not part of it until they enter, so Boca should not be disqualified under Article 107 on ineligible players, though an administrative fine could follow. The AFA could also look to FIFA’s Jurisprudence database, launched in September 2025, when considering the absence of sporting advantage.
