Cole Palmer’s body language is increasingly becoming a major talking point at Chelsea.
The attacking midfielder has grown more and more visibly frustrated at his team have got worse and wors ein recent weeks, and those displays are getting more and more obvious, as we saw when he threw his hands up at Christopher Nkunku for not getting on the end of a pass on Saturday.
That followed suggestions from Jamie Carragher the week before that Palmer could leave Chelsea if they don’t get their act together and start competing for trophies soon.
Enzo Maresca was asked about his star player and his growing anger in the press conference today previewing the Southampton game tomorrow.
Interestingly, Maresca actually turned the tables on Palmer in quite a stark way, pointing to his own missed chances and making it clear that he didn’t think the England star had any grounds to be blaming his teammates over himself:
“No [I don’t think Palmer is especially frustrated with his teammates], because also the other teammates can be frustrated with the chances we missed against Aston Villa, and we miss against Man City. I think both chances were Cole, no? Very clear. The other day, we were 1-1, to score 1-2 with 10 minutes to go. Against City, we were 0-1 to go 0-2 after 10 minutes. I didn’t see his teammates frustrated. Cole is just upset because we’re not winning games, no more than that.”
Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku complain about a decision.
All it takes is a couple of wins and we’ll be back on track, all of this will be forgotten. But at the moment it’s a damaging spiral – Palmer’s frustration is causing him to make poor decisions and snatch at his finishes, which is only deepening the frustration.
