Besiktas are now ‘very close’ to signing Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock, a former Turkish top flight star has claimed.

The Black Eagles have started their new season very positively, having beaten Eyupspor in their opening Turkish Super Lig game and looking likely to play in the Europa League league phase.

They defeated Lithuanian side Kauno Zalgiris on Thursday in the Europa League playoff round first leg tie, putting themselves well placed to progress.

Besiktas showed ambition by getting a deal over for Leandro Trossard, who won the Premier League with Arsenal last term.

Vincenzo Italiano’s side have brought in more players to beef up the team, but are not finished with their summer business yet.

The Newcastle star is not a key player at St. James’ Park and could well move on before the window closes, despite the fact the Magpies have already sold Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Willock’s current deal runs until the summer of 2027 on Tyneside, and he could leave the club for free next year, which Newcastle do not want.

The 27-year-old Englishman is closing in on a move to Besiktas, according to former Turkish player turned journalist Emre Eren.

And it has been suggested that Willock’s proposed move to the Black Eagles is now in the final stages of being completed.

Willock has been a potential departure from Newcastle for some time and was linked with Fulham in the winter transfer window, though they denied making a bid.

Newcastle’s ‘number one priority’ is now signing a new experienced midfielder who is ready to start, as the arrivals of Aladji Bamba and Sean Steur need to learn alongside a quality star in the engine room.

Even though Newcastle do not have a quality and experienced midfielder ahead of the new season, they look happy to see Willock move.
