Rob Edwards revealed his frustration in the aftermath of his side's 3-0 defeat to Leeds United
Luton Town boss Rob Edwards revealed his players opened up too many spaces for Leeds United players in the first 20 minutes of their 3-0 loss at Elland Road, despite working on not stepping out and pressing.
It was another tough night for the Hatters, and the defeat to table-topping Leeds has left them 16th in the Championship table, a real surprise given their brave efforts in the Premier League last season.
In the aftermath of the defeat at Elland Road, Edwards revealed his frustration at the way his players had stepped out and pressed Leeds in the opening 20 minutes, leaving space for Daniel Farke's side to get in behind them.
Edwards revealed that they'd worked on not stepping out and pressing Leeds, but his players did it anyway, and he lamented the poor decisions his side made.
Leeds went 1-0 down in the first 20 minutes that Edwards is referring to when Sam Byram scored, and it set the tone for a difficult evening which saw his side comprehensively beaten.
Speaking in his post-match press conference at Elland Road which was attended by Football League World, Luton boss Edwards said: "We came up against a very good team but the frustration for us, that we talked about in the dressing room, were that we made some poor decisions.
"Forget the goals a second - they are avoidable, goals always are. That first 20 minutes, we stepped out and pressed when we'd worked on not doing that. We opened up too many spaces and allowed them in-behind us too many times.
"It's very frustrating but ultimately, tonight, it's probably the most difficult place to come in the Championship at the moment, and it looked like that for us tonight."
After a brave effort in the Premier League last season which saw Luton finish 18th in the top-flight, but outperform expectations and their fellow promoted clubs, the Hatters were expected to be in the mix for promotion this season.
However, they sit 16th in the Championship table, just three points away from the relegation zone, and while we're only 17 games into the season, they're 11 points off the play-off places, and 17 off the automatic promotion places, meaning they've got it all to do if they're to get anywhere near returning to the top-flight.
Edwards' side have won just five of their 17 games, and they've been on the end of plenty of heavy defeats too.
The result at Elland Road was no surprise, but what will concern supporters is the fact that Edwards' tactics were ignored by the players during the first 20 minutes, and the fact that they went 1-0 down during this period meant that it was always going to be tough to get back into the game.
Things aren't going to plan for Luton this season, and Edwards' comments may just set alarm bells ringing amongst supporters too.
