No decision yet, confirms Riquelme

Some reports in Spain have suggested that Riquelme had already made the decision to stand in the elections against Perez.

However, speaking at a charity event earlier today, the possible presidential candidate insisted that a decision had not yet been made.

“We’re still working on it. They’ve given us very little time to organize something that really makes sense, something good for Real Madrid,” Riquelme said, as quoted by MARCA.

“We’re not going to waste time, and in the next two or three days, we’ll decide what we’re going to do,” he added.

Statement of intent

What the Spanish businessman is clear about is that, if he runs in the elections, it will be to present a serious alternative to Perez, with a project that will usher in a new era at Real Madrid.

“If we go, it will be something that really makes good sense and is exciting for a new Real Madrid for the next 10, 15 or 20 years,” Riquelme stated.

As already confirmed, potential candidates until Saturday 23 May, to submit their candidacies.

Any candidate must meet strict requirements, including at least 20 years of membership at the club and presenting a financial guarantee worth 15% of the club’s budget. At present, that figure is estimated at around €187 million backed by a bank guarantee.

And, Riquelme made it clear that he had the required backing to compete in the elections, saying: “Yes, of course.”
