On Wednesday night, Newcastle United found out they would be playing Spurs in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

That fourth round tie to be played in the midweek of week commencing Monday 27 October.

The winners of Newcastle v Spurs will go into the last eight of the competition.

With then a gap until mid-December when the quarter-final matches will be played.

I was a ‘little’ surprised by the negative reaction from a canny few Newcastle United fans to the draw, that getting Spurs at home was a really bad thing.

It isn’t that I think it will be easy getting past Spurs, far from it. However, when you consider what the possibilities were, how would you rank this fourth round draw?

There were 30 possibilities, 15 potential fourth round opponents, to be drawn against either home or away.

These are the possibilities that I think would have been definitely worse than Newcastle United getting Spurs at home:

Arsenal, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea – home or away.

So that is eight possibilities already that would have been worse than Spurs at St James’ Park.

I would also count these away games as worse options as well – Brighton, Brentford, Crystal Palace, Wolves, Fulham.

That takes me up to 13 possibilities that would have left me feeling worse than Newcastle v Spurs in the draw.

After those 13 worst options, I would put Spurs at home on the same kind of level as if Newcastle had got Brighton, Palace or Fulham at home. Especially considering how we repeatedly beat Spurs at home but lost twice to Brighton at St James’ Park last season and Fulham won on Tyneside as well. Whilst NUFC did thrash Palace 5-0 last season, invariably we find them a tough nut to crack at SJP and low scoring draws have been the case more than once.

Of course everybody would have liked to get Grimsby, although having defeated Man U they have shown they will have a go at anybody. Wycombe would have been seen as similarly preferred opponents.

However, I wouldn’t have seen it as easy if United had been drawn away to the likes of Swansea, Wrexham or Cardiff. Probably preferable to Spurs at home but not by a huge amount.

So out of 30 possibilities, I would have put Spurs at home as one of four possibilities that were ranked 14 to 17th most dangerous, alongside drawing Bright, Palace or Fulham at home. If it had been Spurs v Newcastle that had been drawn out, then I WOULD have seen it as inside the top ten worst options (out of the 30 possibilities) that could have happened.

Personally, I think it is a great draw and if you read what the Spurs fans are saying, they most definitely aren’t fancying a trip to Tyneside under the lights!

I believe Newcastle United can win this one and at the same time take out what would have been a potentially dangerous opponent in the quarter-finals, if drawing Spurs away at that stage.

Bring it on.

Or as we say these days…Get into them!
