Ghana icon Asamoah Gyan has urged the Black Stars and their supporters to remain confident despite being drawn into what he calls a “tricky” group at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The former captain who is Africa’s all time top scorer at the World Cup (6 goal) reacted moments after the draw ceremony held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

Ghana will compete in Group L, alongside England, Croatia and Panama at the expanded 48 team tournament co hosted by the United States, Canada & Mexico.

Gyan’s message

“It’s very tricky group. All four team want to qualify,” Gyan said. “Everybody back home wants Ghana to qualify and we will do our best to reach the next stage. We are optimistic.”

The 2010 quarter finalist emphasised the importance of national unity calling on fans to rally behind the squad as they chase place in the Round of 32.

The England tie.. a rare & historic reunion

One of the most anticipated fixtures will see Ghana face England.. a clash rich in narrative but rare in history.

The two nation have met only once at senior level , a friendly at Wembley Stadium in March 2011 which ended 1-1 after Gyan scored dramatic 90th minute equaliser.

The 2026 tournament will mark the first ever World Cup meeting between the two side.

Croatia & Panama complete testing group

  1. Croatia arrive as one of Europe’s most consistent tournament teams having reached the 2018 World Cup final & the 2022 semi finals.
  2. Panama return to the global stage aiming to surprise bringing physical & disciplined approach as CONCACAF representatives.

The qualification outlook

Under the new format, the top two team in each of the 12 group, plus the best third placed teams will qualify for the Round of 32.. a structure that may work in Ghana’s favour if they secure key results.

Ghana will be appearing at the World Cup for the fifth time after campaigns in 2006, 2010, 2014 & 2022.

Their golden run came in 2010, when Gyan led them to the quarter finals becoming the face of Africa’s historic charge in South Africa.

Now as 2026 approaches, the Black Stars aim to defy expectations once again.
