Former Chelsea midfielder Craig Burley has called Luis Suárez a “disgusting individual” after the Inter Miami striker’s antics in the Leagues Cup final. Burley’s brutal assessment came after Suárez was given a nine-game ban for sparking a melee and appearing to spit at a Seattle Sounders staff member.
The incident happened after Miami’s 3–0 defeat to the Sounders on August 31. Suárez grabbed teenager Obed Vargas by the neck before being pulled away by teammates, then turned towards the Seattle bench and appeared to spit in the direction of staff. The tournament handed out a six-match ban for future Leagues Cup games.
MLS then added their own punishment, suspending Suárez for three league games, and fining the Sounders for their part in the brawl. But that’s already been met with criticism from pundits who feel it’s not enough given the circumstances.

On ESPN FC, Burley made one of the sharpest and loudest critiques of the Uruguayan striker’s behaviour until nowf:
“As we get older, we tend to think about consequences a little more. Yet here we have a guy who is still making these horrible horrible decisions and actions at this stage of his career. That has scarred him for life, that will never go away.
He’s seen as a great footballer. But he’s also a disgusting individual for what he’s done on the field without the ball.”
The former Scotland international highlighted that no matter how many great achievements Suárez had in his career, he will always have a history of controversies clouding his legacy.
On September 8, MLS announced Suárez will miss the upcoming games against Charlotte FC (September 13), Seattle (September 16), and D.C. United (September 20).
The league suspension will immediately impact his availability, but to Burley (and many others), it’s still far too lenient given the gravity of the issue.
