VfB Stuttgart demand a change to VAR usage following Nick Woltemade suspension | OneFootball

VfB Stuttgart’s failed appeal to overturn Nick Woltemade’s red card last weekend has forced the club to demand that the rules of VAR be changed, according to Kicker.

Woltemade was sent off for what the referee saw as a second yellow card offense last weekend during Stuttgart’s 1-2 loss at home to Werder Bremen.

The Swabians believe that Woltemade made very minimal contact with the Bremen player, and therefore, the second yellow was an error in their eyes. Upon reflection, the club certainly have a case.

Though Stuttgart have accepted the ruling, they’re now calling for a change to how VAR is used during Bundesliga matches.

VAR Rules

Currently, there are four instances that VAR can be used during a game. These include a goal, a penalty, a direct red card, and a mistaken identity. However, VAR is not allowed to intervene in the case of a yellow-to-red card offense.

According to VfB, this ruling “should be reconsidered.” For this instance, should the referee of been allowed to use VAR, he could very well of changed his mind and not sent off Woltemade.

Though it may seem like the logical step to take, it appears VAR is already analysising every fine detail of the game. Should it also be used for these instances, the game could become even slower than it’s sometimes forced to be already.

With Woltemade’s suspension, he will miss VfB’s match against Union Berlin this weekend.
