Victor Hugo joins Atlético-MG after complex deal involving Flamengo

Victor Hugo has been confirmed as an Atlético-MG signing after a complicated negotiation that also involved Flamengo, who held his rights, according to Diario Do Peixe.
The midfielder joins to cover the departure of Gabriel Menino, now a Santos recruit for the 2026 season. He has signed a five-year contract with the Belo Horizonte club.
Victor Hugo arrived at Santos following a spell with Göztepe in Türkiye. He made nine appearances for the club, six of them starts.
He was initially targeted on the recommendation of Jorge Sampaoli, who at the time was in talks to become Santos coach. Sampaoli did not take the job and now manages Atlético-MG, where he requested the signing.
Santos will receive 10 percent of the transfer via a showcase fee. Atlético-MG are paying US$ 2.5 million for 50 percent of the player’s rights, with Flamengo retaining the remaining 50 percent.
