Matt Law is usually on the London is Blue podcast so that he can talk about transfers, but on today’s edition he was talking about the actual games.

The team’s form has slumped collectively but also individually – and Law gave some interesting thoughts on why star player Cole Palmer is struggling at the moment.

He referenced the BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella, who was a Chelsea correspondent for a long time and had been at the Brighton game last week which was a real low point in terms of Palmer and Chelsea’s performance.

You can see him give his answer in the clip embedded here, with this answer coming after 6 minutes:

Chelsea need to get the team up the pitch so that Palmer can thrive

Cole Palmer seeks space out wide.

“I thought [Kinsella] made a really good point to me. He said that Cole at the moment reminds him of how [Wayne] Rooney used to get at Man United, and also how [Harry] Kane used to get at Tottenham. When the team is doing badly, they would drop on all sorts of positions and try to take the ball from everyone. And if you look at that Brighton game the other night, Cole was dropping so deep sometimes, to try and get the ball and to try to beat a couple of men,” Law said.

I like that in a way, but in another way you need Cole where he can hurt the opposition properly, and him dropping that deep to get the ball and try to force things obviously negates his impact further forward.”

He also pointed out that it just points out the “level of frustration” that Chelsea are suffering at the moment.

The solution is to just play better and with confidence in defence and midfield, control the ball and the game, and get the whole team up the pitch.
