Marten de Roon joked he was more shocked than anyone by his sensational volley for Atalanta and that he learned the technique from Zinedine Zidane.
The midfielder is not exactly known for his scoring prowess, as this was only his 16th goal in 277 Serie A appearances.
He hadn’t found the back of the net since Atalanta’s 3-2 win over Spezia on May 3, 2023, so well over a year ago.
When De Roon does score, it tends to be memorable, and he smashed in a right-foot volley from the edge of the area in today’s 5-1 victory against Genoa.
The Netherlands international joked on social media that he was more surprised than anyone to get that one in the net.

He also said that he learned the technique of that volley from the legendary Zidane strike for Real Madrid in the 2002 Champions League Final against Bayer Leverkusen.
