Last night was a frustrating night for Chelsea fans – and we can imagine it was even worse for Enzo Maresca.

He had almost coached his team to a jammy win – only for them to blow it in injury time to a long throw.

Jamie Redknapp on Alejandro Garnacho’s mistake.

The coach had gambled a little with his lineup on the night, with changes forced on him by injuries and international break fatigue.

Speaking to Chelsea TV after the game, the Blues boss was philosophical about

“It’s a shame… I think we struggled in the first half for many reasons. But in the second half we were much better. We scored two, we could have scored more.”

We still think it’s a push to say that we deserved to win the game, as he did in his other presser. But there’s no doubt we improved dramatically when Maresca brought on the cavalry in the second half. The issue is that it’s been the same slow starts and turgid attacking play for such long periods of the last year.

Maresca also had some kind words for Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder was one of the few first team players who had a rest during the international break and it really showed:

“Enzo was very good. I think compared to the first 2 or 3 games of the Premier League he was much, much better. But he knew that working day by time he was going to get better.”

It was just a shame that the rest of the team couldn’t live up to his levels, especially in the first half. They are all going to have to improve significantly before next week, when we face Bayern Munich and Manchester United away…
