Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer has announced his international retirement after helping Switzerland reach the EURO 2024 quarter-final.
The shot-stopper will no longer represent his country at international level, having amassed 94 senior caps.
Set to turn 36 in December and under contract with Inter until June 2026, he announced the news with a moving video covering his journey in the Swiss shirt.
“After careful consideration, I have decided to end my career as goalkeeper for the Swiss national team,” he wrote on Instagram.
“It was a great honour and privilege to represent my country at the highest level for 12 years and in 94 international matches.
“Thank you, Switzerland!”
The veteran started his international career in the Under-16 team, progressing to become undisputed first choice goalkeeper for the senior squad for 10 years.
He helped Switzerland reach the Round of 16 four times and the quarter-finals twice between World Cup and European Championship participation.
