(Video) Lionel Messi sparks controversy after late free-kick in Inter Miami win
Lionel Messi caused controversy after a late free-kick goal as Inter Miami beat Orlando City 4-2 in MLS action.
Lionel Messi was at the center of attention during Inter Miami’s away match against Orlando City on Monday, in second round of the Major League Soccer season.
Inter Miami were trailing by two goal before mounting a strong comeback. Messi scored twice helping his team turn the game around and secure 4-2 victory.
His second goal came in the 90 minute when he scored directly from a free kick to seal the win.
After scoring his second goal, the 38 year-old Argentine celebrated in front of the home crowd. He then made a gesture toward Orlando City’s bench appearing to ask a member of the coaching staff if he wanted his autograph.
The moment quickly drew attention as it came shortly after Messi had exchanged words with Orlando City staff earlier in the match. The exchange followed Orlando’s second goal, a moment that seemed to frustrate the Inter Miami captain.
The incident was highlighted by The Guardian which described the scene as unusual. The report noted how Messi celebrated in front of the Orlando fans before directing his gesture toward the opposing bench.
The newspaper added that Messi clearly understands the meaning of competition even in MLS, suggesting that the reaction showed how seriously he approaches every match.
